Ionian TechnoMedia and Smart SensIon: the first spin-off companies of the Ionian University

With two important decisions taken by the Rector's Council of the Ionian University, a new period of strengthening the institution's extroversion begins, with an emphasis on the dissemination of research and knowledge. The first two spin-off companies of the Ionian University are being established: Ionian TechnoMedia, focusing on digital communication, and Smart SensIon, focusing on technologies for civil protection and the primary sector. 

Regarding the establishment of the spin-offs, Rector Professor Andreas Floros stated that "they are tangible proof of the excellent work being done at the Ionian University in the fields of research and development of applications with innovative features and intensive use of information and communication technologies. In fact, the activity of these companies in the Ionian Islands Region is particularly important, underlining the central role of the University in the development of entrepreneurship in the region and the support of the local community."

Ionian TechnoMedia was created on the initiative of Andreas Giannakoulopoulos, Professor in the Department of Audio and Visual Arts, with the participation of EDIP member Stella Lampoura and postdoctoral researcher Minas Pergantis as founding partners. The development of the company's products and services is based on an innovative software, information, and file architecture which, through a centrally organized content management system, allows for the construction and hosting of multiple interconnected websites. Ionian TechnoMedia will be active in the creation, management, and hosting of applications and content on the internet, as well as in the broader field of digital and hybrid communication. 

Smart SensIon was created on the initiative of Professor Markos Avlonitis of the Department of Informatics, with the participation of Associate Professor Yannis Karydis and IDACH partner Yannis Vlachos as founding partners. The company's technological innovation concerns the design and development of low-cost smart hardware. The company's technological innovation concerns the design and development of low-cost smart hardware, i.e., hardware consisting of low-cost sensor devices with innovative architecture for the direct measurement of known variables or for their indirect measurement through innovative smart methodologies. It also involves the design and development of software for processing and predicting the evolution of complex data.

The establishment of the technology incubators was based on the corresponding positive recommendations of the plenary session of the Research Committee, as well as on the significant preparatory work carried out by the Technology Transfer Office and, in particular, by its Director, Associate Professor Themistoklis Exarchos, and the Head of Commercial Exploitation Strategy and Business Development Support, Associate Professor The procedures for establishing the two companies have been completed both formally and substantively, and we expect them to make their initial presentation soon.
